Finance expert, Wale Edun, a long-time political associate of President Bola Tinubu who is expected to be minister of finance, will not be a yes man of the president, Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele has said.

Speaking at the senate screening of Edun, Opeyemi while acknowledging the encomium poured on the nominee said that he was a member of the Lagos State cabinet at the same time with Edun during which time he said the nominee displayed outstanding attributes of leadership, decisiveness, and independence of character with Tinubu as governor.

He said that Wale Edun would not be a yes man and showed that attribute while in the Tinubu cabinet in Lagos.

He said:

“What I want to testify about the nominee is his strength of character and the fact that he is a motivator. Edun would motivate and energise other members of cabinet in very difficult situations and how he believed sincerely that there is a solution to every challenge, to every problem.

“I think having someone like him in the cabinet of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at a time like this will be a major plus for our country.

“Number two, he was not a Yes man in that cabinet. He was somebody who saw public service only as a temporary thing. At every point, he carried himself like a professional. He wasn’t somebody who could just take anything.

“Where we are now, we need a minister… part of our problem in the last decade was that we had ministers who couldn’t stand their ground to draw a line of demarcation between monetary policies and fiscal policies regardless of how a governor of Central Bank is, the minister of finance is the number one, he must be able to insist on the line of demarcation being drawn between monetary policy and fiscal policy.

“Not the situation where the Central Bank will intervene in everything and you will not even know where the mandate of the Central Bank stops.”
