Akpabio To Meet Tinubu Over ‘Marginalisation’ Of Southeast In Ministerial List
The president of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio is to meet President Bola Tinubu over the agitation of Southeast senators against the disproportionate number of ministers allotted to the region.
GWG.ng reports that out of the 48 ministerial nominees presented to the Senate, the Southeast contributed five representing 10% as against the 18% average for the five other zones in the country.
The situation in the Southeast was formally brought to light in a motion tabled by Senator Tony Nwoye, Labour, Anambra North who alleged that whereas all other zones in the country had extra nominations but that the Southeast became the exception.
Senator Nwoye’s motion against the perceived marginalization of the Southeast in the distribution of ministers was backed by the 14 other senators from the Southeast, the first time that a motion would be backed by all senators from the Southeast in the 10th Senate.
However, as Senator Nwoye was about to commence his reading his motion, Senator Akpabio beckoned on him and the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele to approach him as he made a plea to the Anambra senator for a rethink.
Following a brief discussion among the trio, the Senate President promised that he would personally take up the issue with the president as he pleaded with Senator Nwoye to withdraw the motion on the perceived marginalisation of the Southeast in the list of ministers and allow him to take up the issue.
Following the plea, Senator Nwoye agreed.
