‘I am Sorry, I am Sorry, I am Sorry’ Keyamo Makes Peace With Senators
Erstwhile minister of labour and productivity, Olorogun Festus Keyamo, SAN profusely apologized to the Senate over his conduct towards the 10th National Assembly on Monday afternoon after the legislative body resumed his screening following a rumpus
GWG.ng reports that earlier in the day that chaos broke down on the Senate floor after several senators rose up in opposition to his nomination following his perceived insurbordination to the legislative body over his action as a minister during the Muhammadu Buhari regime.
The crux of the dispute was over the demand of the National Assembly members for slots in the Public Works Programme conceived by the Buhari government to engage 774,000 unskilled workers for six months.
Keyamo had at that time vowed that there would be no slot for the lawmakers causing a public showdown during which it was inferred that Keyamo would not appear before the lawmakers again.
However, as the Senate resumed on Monday evening, Keyamo appologised for the faceoff.
Keyamo explained that following that faceoff in 2021 that few months later that he sought out the chairmen of the two House committees of Labour during which he sought to make peace.
Senator Akwashiki confirmed the narration and that during the peace making parley that Keyamo offered them slots in the Public Works Programme.
Earlier as the Senate resumed Keyamo had explained that no money accrued to him as he said he insisted to President Muhammadu Buhari that the payments be made directly to the beneficiaries by the Central Bank.
“There are only two things I need to say, regarding that programme, every single payment and I insisted to the past president must come from the Central Bank directly to the accounts of the people who were nominated and so, we as ministers and heads of the agency at that time never saw one kobo.
“As he concluded, he said: “Like I said, I am sorry, I am sorry, I am sorry for that misunderstanding,” Keyamo said.
He, however, did not elaborate on the claim by Senator Akwashiki that he went back on his word and offered slots in the Special Works Programme to the lawmakers as they had originally demanded.
Following the apology, he was upon a motion raised by Senate Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume asked to take a bow and go. No questions were directed to him concerning the screening as a move by one senator to allow senators ask him questions was swallowed up by other senators who said his apology was enough.
