In a tragic incident, a hunter known as “Odonkoro,” hailing from the Ufa area in Igarra, Edo State, was shot dead by suspected kidnappers.

The incident occurred during a joint effort by the local vigilante group and the deceased’s colleagues to comb the extensive forest around Igarra and neighboring communities in search of kidnappers and their victims.

The area has been grappling with a resurgence of kidnappings, with the most recent case involving the abduction of five individuals within a span of two days on Farm Road in Igarra. One of the victims was eventually released after an undisclosed ransom was paid.

A vigilante group member who was present during the incident recounted that the tragedy unfolded on Tuesday as they attempted to position themselves in the forest. The kidnappers had apparently spotted them, leading to a fatal shooting. However, the sound of the gunshot alerted other members of the group, prompting the kidnappers to flee the scene in panic.

Following the incident, the vigilante group tracked down the kidnappers’ camp, where they discovered various items including a phone lacking a battery and SIM card, as well as cooked and raw food.

One of the suspects was apprehended when he attempted to disguise himself as a waiting passenger along the Igarra-Ibillo road. The captured individual has since been handed over to the police.

Responding to the security situation in the state, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, announced that the government was taking measures to bolster security. Over 1,500 individuals are currently undergoing training for vigilante duties. This initiative involves reconditioning them to think and act like law enforcement agents, with their main objective being to protect the lives of Edo residents. The government’s commitment to enhancing security aims to make Edo one of the safest states in the country.
