Flight Cancelation Fears As Aviation Workers Commence Indefinite Strike
The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has launched an indefinite strike due to their dissatisfaction with the meager N30,000 monthly salary for workers in the aviation sector.
The strike action involves a complete withdrawal of services, with specific instructions given to the Aviation Security (AVSEC) and logistics sub-sectors to follow suit.
In an official circular directed to key authorities within the aviation sector, including the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Commissioner of Police at Airports Command, the Airport Commandant, and the Director of the Department of State Security (DSS) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, the General Secretary of NUATE, Comrade Ocheme Aba, conveyed the union’s concerns.
The circular, signed by Comrade Ocheme Aba, emphasizes the union’s efforts to address the longstanding issue of employee impoverishment within the Aviation Security (AvSec) and logistics sub-sectors of Nigeria’s aviation industry. Despite attempts to resolve the matter, the management of various companies within the sector has failed to secure contracts that would ensure equitable compensation for their employees.
The circular highlights the alarming state of affairs, with some employees earning as little as N30,000 per month, even with educational qualifications. This situation has led to accusations that AvSec employment in Nigeria resembles a form of exploitative labor akin to a “slave labor camp.”
In response to the persistent lack of progress, the unions thus issued a strike notice to aviation workers.
Referring to their earlier ultimatum dated June 26, 2023, the circular states that all workers across aviation logistics companies are directed to cease their services indefinitely starting from August 16, 2023. This course of action will persist until the demand for fair and just remuneration is met.
NUATE underscores that only the National Secretariat of the union has the authority to issue further directives on this matter. Additionally, NUATE’s State Councils and Branches in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu have been instructed to ensure full compliance with this strike notice.
