Amusan Loses In Medal Race, Nigerians Running For Italy, Bahrain Also Lose Out
In a stunning turn of events at the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, defending champion Tobi Amusan yielded her world women’s 100m hurdles medal to Jamaica’s Danielle Williams.
Williams, the 30-year-old athlete who had previously secured victory in Beijing back in 2015, delivered an unexpected triumph by clocking 12.43 seconds.
The race showcased a fierce competition, as Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico closely followed Williams with a timing of 12.44 seconds. United States’ Kendra Harrison secured the bronze medal with a time of 12.46 seconds.
Notably, both Tobi Amusan and the 2019 winner Nia Ali faced difficulties during the race and finished in the sixth and last positions respectively, signaling a surprising outcome that caught many by surprise.
In a similar turn of events, Jamaica’s Antonio Watson emerged as the victor in the men’s 400m race. Watson, a 21-year-old athlete, outperformed a highly competitive field by expertly timing his sprint down the home stretch, ultimately securing the gold medal with a remarkable time of 44.22 seconds.
GWG further reports that following the failure of Tobi Amusan to win a medal in the 100 meter hurdle hopes for consolation from Nigerians running on the flag of other countries crashed minutes later.
Besides Amusan, the duo of Ayomide Folorunso and Kemi Adekoya, representing Italy and Bahrain respectively did not make the medal list in the women’s 400m hurdles that took place minutes after Amusan lost her medal hope.
