One of the sons of Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba has been arrested for “treason” and is being held in custody along with his father and other members of the family that has ruled the country for more than 50 years.

The ousted president it was gathered has been placed under house arrest alongside some of his family members, but the site of the detention has not been made available.

“President Ali Bongo is under house arrest, surrounded by his family and doctors,” they said in a statement read out on state TV.

The coupists struck in the early hours of Wednesday, annulling Saturday’s election, which Bongo was declared to have won.

“To this effect, the general elections of 26 August, 2023, as well as the manipulated results, are cancelled. The borders are closed until further notice,” stated Colonel Ulrich Manfoumbi, of the Army’s Command and Support Regiment.

The soldiers announced the dissolution of all the institutions of the republic, the parliament, and shut down Gabon’s borders, saying their actions were on behalf of the central African nation’s security and defence forces.

GWG.ng reports that the coup has been generally welcomed across the country and the detention of the son of Ali Bongo is bound to come as a shock to him having been born when his grandfather, Omar Bongo was president. Omar Bongo died in 2009 and his son took over and was on his way to a third term when the military pushed him out on Wednesday.
