Celebrities React As Man Recounts How Police Kept Him For 10 Years On His Way Back From Watching Barca (Video)
In a heartfelt testimony at the Living Faith Church, popularly known as Winners Chapel, a man identified as Martins has shared a harrowing account of how the police kept him away for 12 years on his way back home after going to watch a Barca match.
Martins recalled the fateful day in 2009 when his life took an unimaginable turn. He was returning from a football match, enjoying his passion for the game, when he was abruptly accosted by police officers. Without any evidence or fair trial, he was wrongfully accused of robbery and murder, crimes he had no involvement in.
For a staggering 10 years, Martins languished in a cell, his dreams shattered. However, in a remarkable twist of fate, justice eventually prevailed in 2021. The Justice, Development, and Peace Commission (JDPC) intervened in his case, breathing hope back into his life.
In his own words, Martins expressed, “My name is Martins, I want to thank God and I want youths and football enthusiasts to pay attention. I only went to watch the Barca match. I only went to watch football, that’s all I know, and as I was coming back, the police pulled me aside, and I was subjected to tear gas. When we reached the station, they simply threw me into a cell, without a statement or explanation.”
He continued, “On the third day, ASP Diko, a woman I’ll never forget, came and said, ‘Bring him out, his case is settled already, let’s take him.’ They rushed me to court, where they were calling out another person’s name, someone I didn’t recognize. They accused me of collaborating in a robbery and murder, something I knew nothing about. I thought it was a cruel joke. In 2019, they stopped taking me to court, and in 2020, some people came to preach, and I held onto hope.”
Martins’ breakthrough came in 2021 when representatives from the Justice Development and Peace Commission heard his story. They meticulously traced his identity back to the University of Ibadan, validating his innocence. It was his name that was mistakenly taken to court, and after a decade of wrongful imprisonment, justice prevailed, securing his release.
While the journey was marred by personal losses, including the tragic passing of his mother, Martins remained resolute, stating, “I lost my mother, lost my life, but I didn’t lose my wife.”
