Senate Crisis More Than Storm In A Tea Cup – GWG Investigation
What had been speculated as an imaginary storm in the Senate may be turning out to have some element of validity at least with the emergence of one senator supposedly displeased with the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Senator Elisha Abbo according to newspaper reports on Sunday has been identified as the arrowhead of the agitation against Senator Akpabio.
Abbo is, however, not new to controversy. His emergence as a senator four years ago was trailed by the sex-toy shop incident in which he was caught on camera assaulting a lady attendant over some issues while making transactions in the shop.
The most recent controversy surrounding him was during the recent Senate screening of ministers when he claimed to have passed his Primary six certificate exam from primary three or four.
Identifying himself as a critic of Senator Akpabio, Abbo in an interview with a national newspaper said:
“If Akpabio and his camp wanted a united Senate just like Ahmed Lawal, they could have known exactly what to do during Senate Standing Committees allocation and supplementary budget resources allocation”, Abbo said.
Reacting to syndicated reports in some weekend newspapers which erroneously put the Northwest as the source of the alleged disharmony, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President of the Senate, Hon Eseme Eyiboh said the reports were complete imaginations and sometimes laced with malice to achieve what Senators are yet to comprehend.
Against the background of insinuations that the media spin arose from bad blood over the outcome of the Senate leadership contest, Eyiboh affirmed that the Senate was now a united body following the contest as rivals had pledged loyalty to Senator Akpabio and the institution of the senate after the contest.
He noted that “the Senate has since moved on after the leadership contest. The plot to drag in Senators who initially did not support the emergence of the present leadership into a conspiracy that does not exist was uncharitable to the Senators”.
However, GWG.ng reports that Abbo is involved in the project with a number of former governors in the Senate who are looking beyond Akpabio and are focused on the close relationship between the Senate President and the presidency.
“Many senators are not happy and their angst is not necessarily over the sharing of committees but over their perception of Akpabio as not being able to challenge the wrong policies of the Tinubu administration,” a high-level source in the Senate told GWG.ng of the storm against Akpabio.
