Mrs. Comfort Ubaka, the 75- year old mother of an Okada rider, Stephen Afamefune Ubaka who was allegedly killed in mysterious circumstances in a bullying dispute in Delta State has appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to get justice for her slain son and her octogenarian husband who has been held in custody for the past four months in police detention.

Mrs Ubaka who spoke to journalists at her residence in Ogbe Odogwu, Azungwu Quarters in Ogwashi Uku, Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, also addressed her appeal to the Inspector General of Police to specifically get her husband released from detention following what she alleged as the conspiracy by highly placed personalities in her community.

Mrs. Ubaka who  addressed journalists Wednesday amid sobbing said that trouble started when a chieftaincy title that was traditionally reserved for Azungwu Quarters was bestowed on someone else by the Ogwashi-Uku monarch in outright contravention of the extant traditional rules.

According to her the elders of the community went to the palace to express their concerns over the turn of event; a situation that did not augur well to those concerned.

She said as a result of this development, 29 elders and youths of Azungwu Quarters have been listed  for arraignment in court in Asaba,  stressing that at the moment, 10 persons, including her octogenarian husband had been in detention for over four months over frivolous petitions, bordering on murder, rape and arson, among others.

On how her son died, Mrs Ubaka said:

“My son went to bring back the children from school when two people appeared and asked him to enter the vehicle at Ranoil Station. He refused and they beat him and pushed him into the vehicle. They took him to the Palace, tied his hands with a belt and beat him until he almost became unconscious”.

According to her, good Samaritan brought her son home and when she saw his condition took him to the police station to report but was rebuffed by the police on account of the high personalities from the palace who were mentioned.

Mrs Ubaka said that she could not leave her son with the police,

“So, I took him to the hospital. At the hospital, he was vomiting blood that would fill a bucket. I was wondering what happened to him. It was  barely  one  week after and he died.

“Shortly before he gave up the ghost, the deceased was said to spoken at lent in a video on what transpired in the hands of the fleeing  assailants. Some aggrieved residents of the community including elders and leaders condemned in very strong terms the murder of the Okada ridder saying that apart from the tension that had lately enveloped the community, there was evidence of palpable fear in the area occasioned by atmosphere of insecurity and fear of who next would be arrested by the police. Those who spoke on condition of anonymity decried the hopeless in the town which has become of Ogwashi uku lately. They disclosed that 10 out of the 29 persons pencilled down for arrest  including Illoba Obata  who did video recording of the deceased before he passed, were already being detained at the correctional center. They therefore called for  a thorough investigation  to unearth those behind the killing  and bring them to justice saying that justice delayed was justice denied.

Others ,who spoke in the same vein, including youths of the community, said they were tired of constant harassment and intimidation and can no longer go to their farms, which according to them is their primary source of income and called on the government to intervene immediately.

Palace spokesman, Prince Onyema Okonjo said the palace was aware that two separate murder cases were under investigation  and  advised those invited by the police to  honour such investigation to enable police expedite  it’s investigation  and bring the culprits to book.
