Saudi King Invites Nigeria, Others To Discuss Israel – Hamas War

King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia who is the present chairman of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) states has summoned Nigeria and other member states of the body for an emergency meeting on the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

The organization which is the voice of the Muslim world is expected to take a position at the meeting in Saudi Arabia scheduled to hold between October 18 and 19.

It is not known if President Bola Tinubu will attend the meeting.

A statement posted on the OIC’s website read as follows:

“At the invitation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which chairs the current session of the Islamic Summit and the Executive Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Organization’s Executive Committee is convening an urgent open-ended extraordinary meeting at the ministerial level, to address the escalating military situation in Gaza and its environs as well as the deteriorating conditions that endanger the lives of civilians and the overall security and stability of the region,” the statement read.

“The extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee of the OIC will take place on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the General Secretariat headquarters in Jeddah Governorate.”

GWG.ng reports that Hamas on October 7 launched an assault on Southern Israel leading to the death of more than 1,300 persons the great majority of them civilians. Israel claims that 199 persons were also abducted by the Hamas fighters into Gaza.

Israel immediately launched retaliatory attacks which has led to the death of more than 2,800 persons in Gaza. Israel has also massed troops set for a ground war Israeli leaders say is aimed at eradicating Hamas.

The invitation to the OIC summit will be Nigeria’s first public stance on the Israeli-Hamas war.
