Relief for ASUU Members As Tinubu Waives ‘No Work, No Pay’ Order

In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has announced the partial waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” order previously imposed on members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This decision comes in the aftermath of the eight-month-long strike initiated by ASUU on February 14, 2022, which concluded on October 17, 2022.

During the strike, the then President, Muhammadu Buhari, had enforced the ‘no work, no pay’ policy, leading to a withholding of salaries for the duration of the industrial action. However, a breakthrough emerged on Friday when Presidential Spokesman Ajuri Ngelale revealed that a partial waiver had been granted over the order.

According to Ngelale, the waiver allows previously striking ASUU members to receive four months’ worth of salary accruals out of the eight months withheld during the strike. The decision was made under the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy. It aims to alleviate the challenges faced during the implementation of vital economic reforms and acknowledges the faithful implementation of agreed terms between ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

President Tinubu’s approval of the waiver for the ASUU members comes with a crucial condition: both the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment must establish a Document of Understanding. This document will confirm that this exceptional waiver granted to ASUU is the final one to be issued to the union and all other education sector unions.
