King Charles Delivers First King Speech In 70 Years (Pictures)
By GWG International Affairs Editor
King Charles III has delivered his first King’s Speech to Parliament, marking the start of the parliamentary year.
GWG.ng reports that it is the first time the king’s speech would be delivered in 70 years given the more than 70 year reign of the last monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
King Charles along with Queen Camila travelled through the streets of London in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach in a ceremony going back centuries.
He began by paying tribute to his “darling mother” and went on to list the government’s current priorities.
Among them will be investment in transport, laws to prevent children smoking, and tougher sentences for serious offenders
The PM says the speech represents his vision of “a better Britain”, Labour say it amounts to a “pretty pathetic programme of tinkering”
It’s Charles’ first King’s Speech as monarch, but he stepped in for the late Queen in May 2022
The last King to oversee the State Opening of Parliament was George VI in 1950.
GWG.ng reports that the King’s speech is a text of the parliamentary plans of the government and it is normally prepared by the government and delivered to the monarch to read as the intentions of the government in power.
The event is synonymous to the budget speech normally delivered by the president of Nigeria and the state of the union address delivered by the president of the United States of America.
