Uproar In Plateau As Youths Protest Against Appeal Court Judgments

Tension escalated on the plateau on Wednesday as youths across the 17 local government areas poured out to the streets to protest recent appeal court judgments that reversed the outcome of the National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections in Plateau State.

The youths called for the urgent intervention of the National Judicial Council (NJC) as they said that the cases were decided based on pre-election issues as against the injunction of the Supreme Court.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja had recently  nullified the elections of two PDP Senators from Plateau  North and Plateau South and four members of the House of Representatives on account of alleged non-compliance to a State High Court order that has been adjudged to be a pre-election matter.

Besides, the PDP has disputed the claims of non-compliance claiming that it repeated the congresses as ordered by the court.

Mr Patrick Jatau, who spoke on behalf of the youths during the protest in Jos, the Plateau State capital which was peaceful described the recent judgments as a ”miscarriage of justice”

He noted that the sacked lawmakers were dully elected by majority of their constituents and called on the NJC to take a second look on the merits of the cases.

”We are here as young men and women from the 17 local government areas of Plateau to express our dissatisfaction with the recent judgements of the appeal court over the cases in the state.

”We are not happy because the people we overwhelmingly voted for have been sacked by the court using technicalities.

”How  can the mandate of someone who scored over 95,000 votes in an election be nullified by the court and declare the one who polled 35,000 votes as winner?

”So, we call on the NJC to review these judgments so as to restore these mandates to the original winners; those that the masses actually for ,”he called.

Upon the protest by the youths, Jatau particularly called on the NJC to use the Plateau judgments to redeem the sinking image of the judiciary in the country.

He insisted that the youths would mount major streets of Jos to conduct a peaceful protest until the judgments are reviewed.
