Despite the Osun State government’s denial of a plot to remove the State’s Chief Judge, Justice Adepele Ojo, Governor Ademola Adeleke has sanctioned the resolution of the State House of Assembly, instructing the CJ to step aside from her position.

Consequently, Governor Adeleke has appointed Justice Olayinka David Afolabi as the acting Chief Judge of Osun State with immediate effect, aligning with the Assembly’s decision.

Earlier, the Coalition of Osun State Civil Society Groups had warned against the alleged plot to remove the Chief Judge.

GWG.ng reports that CJ Adepele Ojo had taken legal action, filing a case against Governor Adeleke before the National Industrial Court in Ibadan to prevent her removal. The court motion sought an interim injunction to safeguard her position until the determination of the case.

Governor Adeleke, through spokesperson Mallam Olawale Rasheed, clarified on Thursday that the removal of Justice Adepele Ojo was approved based on the House of Assembly’s resolution of November 16, 2023. The Assembly resolved to investigate various petitions against Chief Judge Adepele Ojo, citing misconduct, abuse of office, corruption, and a lack of respect for due process. The House called for her to step aside during the investigation, not as disciplinary action but to ensure a fair inquiry.

As a part of the resolution, the Executive Governor was urged to immediately swear in the next judge in order of seniority as the Acting Chief Judge of Osun State. The House also recommended notifying the National Judicial Council and the State Judicial Service Commission promptly. Consequently, the Deputy Governor has been directed to perform the swearing-in ceremony for the Acting Chief Judge, scheduled for Friday at the Executive Lounge, Governor’s Office, Osogbo.
