Lagos Govt Explains Demolition Of Buildings In Ebute-Metta

The Lagos State Government on Saturday, commenced the demolition of distressed buildings in the Ebute-Metta area of the state. Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, who led the demolition team emphasized that occupants of the affected buildings were duly served notices but declined to vacate.

Olumide stated that the government took this action to safeguard lives, especially since most of the structures failed structural integrity tests. “The primary responsibility of the government is to protect lives, so we cannot wait and allow the buildings to collapse and endanger people,” he asserted.

He underscored Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to prioritizing the lives of all residents, irrespective of their tribe or religion. Olumide expressed concern over occupants refusing to evacuate despite sufficient notice, emphasizing that life takes precedence over buildings.

The commissioner urged owners of distressed buildings to proactively demolish such structures, warning that the government would confiscate land where it removes compromised structures.

Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), supported the demolition, deeming it necessary due to the peril these buildings posed to neighboring structures and residents’ lives in the Ebute-Metta area.

“We cannot fold our arms and allow irregularities to continue to thrive in this area, where lives of innocent people would be at risk because of the lackadaisical attitude of a few individuals who have refused to do the right thing,” Oki stated on the reason for the demolition in Ebute-Metta.

He appealed to Lagosians to report distressed buildings and other physical planning infractions within their neighborhoods, encouraging a collective effort to ensure safety and compliance.
