Ex-Paralympic Champion, Oscar Pistorius, To Be Freed On Parole

Former Paralympic champion, Oscar Pistorius, is set to be released on parole nearly 11 years after the tragic murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Pistorius, who shot Steenkamp multiple times on Valentine’s Day in 2013, claiming to have mistaken her for a burglar, was sentenced to 13 years in prison by a South African court in 2016. The parole board has determined his release date to be January 5, 2024.

Steenkamp’s mother, June Steenkamp, did not oppose bail but expressed concerns about Pistorius’s “huge anger issues” and questioned whether they were adequately addressed during his prison term.

In a letter to the parole board, she mentioned potential worries for the safety of any woman in contact with him. June Steenkamp opted not to attend the parole hearing near Pretoria, citing her inability to face Pistorius again at this stage, given the immense strain, especially after the recent passing of her husband and Reeva’s father, Barry.

Barry Steenkamp had hoped for the full truth from Pistorius before his passing, as reflected in June Steenkamp’s statement. This marks Pistorius’s second parole hearing in less than a year. His initial bid was dismissed in March due to an incomplete minimum detention period, a ruling later deemed a mistake by South Africa’s Constitutional Court, leading to the parole hearing held on Friday.
