Nigerian folklore vocal diva, Shola Allyson-Obaniyi, recently shared insights into the essence and creative process behind her music. Despite the indigenous nature of her songs, primarily in Yoruba, Shola has become a prominent figure whose music resonates deeply.

Celebrating two decades since the release of the song that propelled her into the limelight, ‘Eji Owuro,’ Shola spoke with the media about her musical journey and the transformative impact of her work on people’s lives. She highlighted the numerous testimonies and accolades attesting to how her music has brought solace, changed lives, and even prevented suicide.

Reflecting on the journey since ‘Eji Owuro,’ which served as the soundtrack for a movie in 2003, Shola expressed gratitude to God. She acknowledged the song as a pivotal point in her musical career, marking the beginning of a trajectory that has seen her release 12 albums in two decades. Another album is currently in the works. Shola sees herself as a vessel in the hands of her creator, continually evolving and contributing to the world, both in her career and as a mother.

Having graduated from The Polytechnic, Ibadan, with a focus on Music Technology, majoring in Voice and minoring in Music, Shola’s journey encompasses diverse experiences. Born into a Muslim family, she served as a choir leader in various churches, notably the Celestial Church of Christ. Her encounter with Prof Oluwole Oladejo Adetiran was a pivotal moment, mentoring her in her musical pursuits.

Regarding collaborations with other musicians, Shola emphasized that her creative process, often divinely inspired and spontaneous, determines whether she includes other artists in her albums. While she has featured Urban Hi-Life Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold in her ‘Imuse’ album and collaborated with the younger gospel minister Sunmisola Agbebi-Okeleye, she remains selective.

Expressing her sensitivity and introspective approach to singing, Shola Allyson-Obaniyi values attention to detail in her creative process, sometimes limiting the opportunity for collaborations. She expressed openness to collaboration if guided by the Holy Spirit and mentioned the joy of working with Adekunle Gold on the folklore ‘Alujanjankijan’ and with Sunmisola.

With hit songs like ‘Gbeje F’ori,’ ‘Ire,’ and ‘Im’oore,’ alongside popular tracks like ‘Eji Owuro,’ ‘Obinrin Ni Mi,’ ‘Aseye,’ and ‘Isinmi,’ Shola Allyson-Obaniyi, the queen of folklore, is determined to remain relevant in the music industry. Celebrating two decades in her fulfilling career, she hosted a gratitude concert, performing with her full band to the delight of fans and music lovers.
