Embattled Governor Faces New Crisis As Court Sacks Speaker

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has sacked the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, a member of the All Progressives Congress in the state and with it bringing Governor Abdullahi Sule into a new crisis.

GWG.ng reports that the development has further worsened the balance of power in the house as it sinks the number of APC members in the House to 9 out of 24 with the PDP-led caucus of minority parties rising to 15.

The speaker was sacked in a judgement delivered on Tuesday by the Court which declared the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Sa’ad Abdullahi Ibrahim, as the rightful winner of the election of the March 18, 2023 election for the Umaisha/Ugya State Constituency.

With the judgment, the number of PDP members in the House has risen to 9 with the NNPP and the SDP each having three seats each.

GWG.ng reports that the sack of the speaker could provoke another crisis in the House which had been caused by the determination of the PDP in alliance with the SDP and NNPP to elect the speaker as against the wish of Governor Abdullahi Sule.

The House had been polarised after the PDP led caucus had elected Daniel Ogazi as speaker in early June but the governor had insisted on Abdullahi leading to a stalemate until Ogazi stepped down on July 21 following the intervention of several stakeholders.

The sack of the speaker is now bound to create a new crisis for the governor in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly as he ponders new options on a new speaker of the house.

Governor Sule’s move is, however, bound to be resisted by the opposition members of the House who could seek to have thier turn in producing the speaker.

GWG.ng reports that the governor is also facing a major battle over his election having scrapped through the Court of Appeal after his election was anulled by the tribunal. He is now awaiting the appeal in the Supreme Court.
