HURIWA Asks CJN To Probe Plateau Reps’ Claims Of APC Connections In Judiciary

Civil Rights Advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA has urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola to probe a comment by Rep Yusuf Gagdi from Plateau State that the All Progressives Congress, APC has collaborators among some elements in the judiciary.

HURIWA gave the call as it also urged the CJN to reconsider his assertion that the court is not moved by public opinion.

HURIWA in a statement made available to newsmen said:

HURIWA recalled vividly that Gagdi came under attack last week after allegedly bragging that his party will influence the decision of the Supreme Court on the petition challenging the outcome of the governorship election in the state.

In a video trending on the social media, Gagdi was heard allegedly boasting at a rally in the state about the APC’s connections at the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

“We have gone to the Appeal Court and the final destination is the Supreme Court and we will meet there. That is where we will know who they know and they will know who we know,” Gagdi was heard saying in the 18-seconds video clip.

The Rights group stated that this sarcastic comment that is damaging to the reputation of the Supreme Court of Nigeria needs to be investigated by the chief justice of Nigeria because it is the silence from the judicial authority about this sort of statements that give the public the impression that the judges can be purchased by the highest bidders.

Maintaining her position that public opinions that are constructive and factually accurate should matter to the nation’s judiciary, HURIWA stated that the law is made for the people and must work for the people even as the organisation said it was wrong for the head of an arm of government to resist public opinion even when the constitution in section 14 (2) (a) provides that: “Sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria from whom government through this constitution derives all its powers and authority.”
