Rhoda Jatau, Bauchi Woman Detained For Condemning Lynching Of Deborah Samuel Released

Rhoda Jatau, a Bauchi woman who was detained by the Police in Bauchi following her condemnation of the brutal murder of Deborah Samuel, a 200-level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto by her fellow students has been released.

GWG.ng reports that Rhoda Jatau was released on Friday night following the intervention of the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council, NIERC.

GWG.ng reports that Rhoda Jatau, a mother of five, was detained in May 2022 for sharing a video that condemned the lynching of Deborah.

She was accused of among others of cyberstalking and actions capable of instigating violence.

According to a source privy to the development:

“Following the outcry from the Christian community in Nigeria over the continued detention of Rhoda Jatau in Bauchi Prison, the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, and Christian Solidarity Worldwide Nigeria intervened in the matter.

“We are pleased to report that Ms. Rhoda Jatau has been granted bail and subsequently released from detention today (yesterday).

“We have high hopes that the case will end in praise. Let’s continue to keep her in our prayers. The leadership of NIREC played a key role. Praise be to our God,” the source said.

Jatau was charged under Sections 114 and 210 of the Penal Code Law, as well as Section 24 Subsection 1b(i) of the Cyber Crimes Act, accused of inciting public disturbance; exciting contempt of religious creed; and cyberstalking.

GWG.ng reports that the release of Rhoda Jatau came after a group of NGOs including WARD-C had activated machinery to press for her freedom.
