New Intrigues Shadow Defection Plot By Rivers Lawmakers

Speculations on a plot by 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC has become enveloped by new intrigues.

The speculated defection GWG.ng gathered is now being held in check by the wait for the outcome of the Supreme Court judgment on the governorship election.

GWG.ng reports that Governor Simi Fubara fell out with his political godfather, Nyesom Wike leading to the factionalisation of the State House of Assembly.

The PDP has all but one seat in the 32-member House of Assembly. 27 of the 31 PDP members are loyal to Wike while four, including a factional speaker Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie are said to be fanatically loyal to the governor.

As part of the strategies to bring the governor to his knees, GWG.ng gathered that the majority of the Rivers legislators have activated a plan to defect to the APC.

The plan to defect follows the recent decision of the APC national leadership to handover the structure of the party in Rivers State to Wike, a development that has put Wike in control of the structures of the two leading political parties in the state.

The decision has put Wike as arguably the first political godfather in Nigeria to control the structures of the two major political parties in a state.

However, with Fubara reportedly breaching the order by Wike not to fraternize with the PDP Governors’ Forum, the fear that the governor would forcefully take control of the PDP structure in the state has now fueled speculations on the planned defection of the PDP lawmakers.

Sources in Port Harcourt and Abuja who confirmed the plot to defect, however, said that the lawmakers were being held in check by the uncertainty over the Supreme Court judgment on the Rivers State governorship election.

A source privy to the plot said:
“They are being held back by the Supreme Court judgment. You know they are politicians and nobody wants to lose if the judgment favours the governor. They know their situation now and should the governor win the Supreme Court judgment and remain in office, they know they will lose out.”
