Minister Resigns From Tinubu’s Cabinet For New Position

Mr Simon Lalong until Wednesday minister of Labour and Employment was on Wednesday sworn in as senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC and by that, decided to resign from the Bola Tinubu cabinet.

Lalong, thus became the first minister to resign from the Bola Tinubu cabinet.

GWG.ng reports that the administration of Lalong’s oath of allegiance followed his declaration as winner of the Plateau -South Senatorial election by the Appeal Court following the disqualification of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC had declared the PDP’s Bali Napoleon as having won the election with a total of 148,844 votes against Governor Lalong of APC who scored 91,674 votes while Tobias Nda of the Labour Party scored 17,325 votes.

However, the Court of Appeal had following a suit filed by Lalong upheld his claim that the PDP did not have a structure to have contested the election. The move has, however, raised strong controversy as it ran against the Supreme Court judgment that pre-election matters should not be considered by election tribunals.

The move by Lalong to resign from the Tinubu cabinet to take up the seat is viewed by political stakeholders as a move to preserve the seat for the APC given claims that the party would have found it difficult to have won the seat in a fresh election.

Lalong took up the seat after the Clerk of the Senate, Mr Chinedu Akubueze, administered the oath and allegiance on him and with it implicitly decided to resign from the Tinubu cabinet.

There are also considerations that Lalong decision to resign from the Tinubu cabinet may have been fired by the lack of confidence expressed on him by organised labour.
