Man Exonerated After 48 Years In Prison!

Glynn Simmons, now 71 years old, has endured what the National Registry of Exonerations deems the lengthiest prison sentence resulting from a wrongful conviction in a 1975 murder case.

Initially a suspect in an armed robbery that claimed the life of a liquor store clerk in Edmond, Okla., Glynn Simmons found himself charged with both robbery and capital murder despite ambiguity from witnesses.

Two key witnesses to the incident, including a survivor who was shot during the robbery, asserted their inability to identify Glynn Simmons as one of the culprits. Nevertheless, Simmons was ensnared in a lineup, leading to charges that would significantly impact his life.

The recent ruling not only makes Glynn Simmons eligible for up to $175,000 in compensation for the wrongful conviction but also paves the way for a potential federal lawsuit against Oklahoma City and the law enforcement entities involved in Simmons’ arrest and conviction, as indicated by defense attorney Joe Norwood.

Despite the prospect of compensation, its realization remains a distant prospect. Simmons, currently battling cancer diagnosed post-release, relies on donations for sustenance. Oklahoma law stipulates a maximum compensation of $175,000 for an exonerated individual. However, a proposed bill, championed by democratic state Rep. Cyndie Munson, aims to amend this to $50,000 for every year spent in prison, mirroring legislation in 35 other states.

As Glynn Simmons awaits the potential enactment of this bill, he relies on the generosity of GoFundMe donations, which have exceeded $100,000, surpassing the initial goal of $50,000. The funds will support Simmons in securing housing, clothing, sustenance, and covering the medical expenses associated with his battle against liver cancer. “I plan to use my remaining time to help others who are still stuck where I was. We need to fix this system so that what happened to me will never happen to anyone else, ever again!” Simmons’ donation page reads.
