The Nigeria National League (NNL) has taken a resolute stance by imposing significant fines of N1 million each on Crown FC and Ikorodu City, responding to disturbing incidents of assault associated with both football clubs.

The incident involving Crown FC transpired during their week five fixture against Solution FC when the club’s general manager, Olamide Ilupeju, breached regulations by encroaching onto the pitch, where he proceeded to threaten and verbally assault a match official.

In response to this egregious misconduct, the club is now burdened with a financial penalty of N1 million.

Similarly, Ikorodu City faced serious charges of assault and hooliganism during their match at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena against Tradesafe FC. Reports surfaced that the club’s supporters resorted to throwing missiles at the players and bench of the home team. Thankfully, security agents intervened promptly, preventing the situation from escalating further.

In addition to the substantial fines, both Ilupeju and the supporters of Ikorodu City have been issued a final warning regarding their behavior. The NNL has explicitly cautioned that any recurrence of such “unholy sports conduct” will be met with even more severe sanctions.

Setting a stringent tone, the NNL has mandated that both Crown FC and Ikorodu City settle their respective fines by January 6, 2024, strategically aligning with their next scheduled games. This proactive measure reinforces the league’s unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity and sportsmanship expected in football. The imposition of these fines serves as a clear and unequivocal message that inappropriate behavior and acts of violence will not be tolerated within the league, emphasizing the paramount importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment for players, officials, and fans alike.
