Army Arrests Soldier Who Mocked Sanwo-Olu In Viral Video

The Nigerian Army has arrested a soldier who openly criticized Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for ordering the arrest of an army personnel and an okada rider driving against traffic in the state. Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, confirmed the soldier’s arrest, though the identity remains undisclosed.

Expressing concern over the incident, Lagbaja emphasized that the soldier’s behavior, specifically driving against traffic, does not align with the core values of the Nigerian Army. The arrest reflects a commitment to maintaining discipline within the military ranks.

The backdrop to this arrest stems from Governor Sanwo-Olu’s encounter with a soldier driving against traffic on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway on January 2, 2023. In a viral video capturing the incident, the governor expressed his displeasure, stating, “Put him there; let your father come and rescue you. You’re telling me you are a soldier; that is the reason I’m going to lock you up, useless boy.”

The governor’s strong response sparked criticism on social media, with various videos emerging, including one where an unidentified soldier defended his colleague against the governor’s actions. This video gained widespread attention on January 4, drawing further scrutiny to the incident.

Addressing the plethora of viral videos portraying soldiers criticizing Governor Sanwo-Olu, Lagbaja clarified that most were fabricated. He emphasized that only one authentic video was investigated, leading to the identification and apprehension of an unidentified soldier involved.

Chief of Army Staff, Lagbaja, highlighted ongoing efforts to educate soldiers on appropriate conduct in the areas where they are deployed.
