Osun: APC Sues Adeleke Over Appointment Of Alleged PDP Member As OSIEC Chairman
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken legal action against Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun, filing a suit at the Federal High Court in Osogbo.
The suit, labeled FHC/OS/CS/2/2024, alleges that the governor appointed a member of the Peoples Democratic Party as the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC).
The APC, represented by counsel Ayodele Kusamotu, seeks to have the court set aside the appointment of Mr. Hasim Abioye as OSIEC Chairman.
The supporting affidavit, signed by Waheed Adeniran, Assistant Secretary in Osun, contends that appointing a partisan individual as the head of the state electoral body violates the law and jeopardizes the credibility of local government elections in Osun. The affidavit argues that Mr. Abioye’s past affiliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) raises concerns about his ability to remain neutral and impartial in overseeing the local government election processes.
The APC emphasizes that Governor Adeleke, as the 3rd defendant, cannot legally nominate and forward the name of Hasim Abioye, a registered member of his political party, to the relevant authorities for screening, confirmation, and appointment as the OSIEC chairman.
In light of these concerns, the party urges the court to issue an order setting aside or nullifying the appointment of the OSIEC chairman, further seeking his removal from office and position. The lawsuit involves multiple co-defendants, including the Attorney General of the Federation, Minister of Justice, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Osun, Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, and the Osun State House of Assembly. The APC’s legal action underscores the significance of fair and impartial electoral processes in upholding democratic values.
