Chevron Names Swartz As Chairman Nigeria, Mid-Africa Operations

Chevron, the global oil giant, has announced the appointment of Mr. Jim Swartz as the Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) and the Mid-Africa Business Unit, effective April 1, 2024.

CNL operates the joint venture between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Limited, and CNL itself.

In a statement released by Esimaje Brikinn, Chevron’s General Manager of Policy, Government, and Public Affairs Unit, it was revealed that Swartz, formerly Vice President of Capital Projects based in Houston, USA, would be taking on this new role. Brikinn expressed confidence in Swartz’s capabilities, noting his wealth of experience in the upstream business and his proven ability to forge effective partnerships with stakeholders.

Highlighting Swartz’s academic background, the statement shared that he is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, holding a Bachelor of Science in Geology, and earned a Master of Science in Geology from the University of Oklahoma. Swartz began his journey with Chevron in 1990 as a Geologist in Louisiana, subsequently taking on roles of increasing responsibility in Angola and the United States.

The newly appointed Chairman and Managing Director will be succeeding Richard (Rick) Kennedy, who has decided to retire after nearly four decades of dedicated service to the company. The company acknowledged Kennedy’s thoughtful and collaborative leadership, citing his significant contributions to the Nigerian oil and gas industry during his tenure. Kennedy played a pivotal role as Chairman of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), leading industry engagements on crucial matters such as the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and other initiatives.

Furthermore, Chevron recognized Kennedy’s commitment to peace-building and socio-economic development in the Niger Delta region during his role as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND). The transition marks a new chapter for Chevron in Nigeria, with Swartz set to continue the legacy of leadership within the company.
