“What I am doing here today is to give back to society and to thank God for seeing me through the February 2023 general elections that made me who I am at the moment and not as a political campaign,” Nwoye, one of the most vibrant political actors to have come out of Anambra State said at the occasion where an estimated 14,000 persons were empowered.
As a sign of his appreciation to God and his constituents, Senator Nwoye following a thanksgiving service at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Onitsha, proceeded to the empowerment ceremony at the All Saints Cathedral Church’s field, Onitsha last Sunday.
The event had in attendance the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Afred Achebe, all the traditional rulers from Anambra North, Bishop Valerian Okeke, Bishop Owen Nwokolo, Bishop Paulinus Chukwumemeka Ezeokafor and the Senator representing Enugu East, Senator Kevin Chukwu.
Also present were Senator Victor Umeh, the Lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Hon Afam Ogene, the State Chairman of Labour Party, Chief Ogochukwu Emeh, Mr Valentine Ozigbo and other Labour Party supporters.
While affirming that the gesture was not in any way tied to any campaign, Nwoye said he was very grateful for the mercies of God upon him and hence his decision to reciprocate by thanking God and the constituents.
The beneficiaries of the empowerment were mostly youths and farmers drawn from across the political divide in all the seven local government areas of Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Oyi, Ogbaru, Onitsha North and Onitsha South that constitute Anambra North Senatorial District.
It is noteworthy that Senator Nwoye has had varied experiences across the political divide and as such his empowerment could not have been limited to Labour Party.
Items distributed at the occasion included engine boats, sewing machines, engineering kits, grinding machines, fertilisers, rice, generating sets, and cash gifts ranging from N10,000 to N50,000.
The senator said that the empowerment was his contribution to reduce crime and unemployment in the Senatorial District and beyond.
He said he was troubled every time he saw people, especially youths roam the streets because they had no jobs.
Senator Nwoye used the opportunity to thank God how he has also been helped by at least two notable personalities notably, Prince Arthur Eze and Mr. Peter Obi whom he noted touched his life in one way or the other.
The lawmaker urged the beneficiaries who are mostly farmers to make good use of the things given to them to enhance their opportunities in life.
Senator Nwoye used the opportunity to commiserate with relations of those who recently lost their lives in the boat accident that occurred in Mmiata Anam, Anambra West LGA.
While noting that the disaster was a result of the poor transportation system in the area, he promised to use his good offices to address the situation.
One of the dignitaries present at the occasion was Hon Patrick Okafor, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North State Constituency.
He lauded Senator Nwoye for his continued gesture and magnanimity, saying that it was such gesture that had made the senator to be loved by his people.
Among the beneficiaries were Chief Sylvester Onukwu, Mrs Gloria Edu and Chuka Nwabudu who separately commended Senator Nwoye for his gesture who said that the empowerment programme had gone a long way in addressing the needs of the people of the constituency.
