Plateau supreme Court Judgment

Jos – When the news filtered in last Friday that the Supreme Court has reinstated Barr. Caleb Mutfwang as the governor of Plateau State having been sacked from his seat in November 2023 by the Appeal Court, citizens across the 17 local government areas of the State went into a frenzy, rolling out drums to celebrate the news.

From the supporters of the Governor’s People Democratic Party, PDP, tricycle operators, to market women, they were seen hugging one another, and impromptu street parties organized in major spots across the State.

The joy rolled over as the Governor returned to the State at the weekend. A mammoth crowd assembled at the Yakubu Gowon Airport, Heipang, through the major highways in the metropolis to the streets leading to the Langfield Event Centre, Little Rayfield where a grand reception was held for him.

Over 72 hours after the judgment, the palpable joy has not abated; amidst the celebration and bemoaning that the PDP was “robbed” of their victory at the Appeal Court, the citizens also task the governor not to dash their expectations.

A market woman, Talatu Iliya said, “I am very happy that my time under the sun to vote for Governor Mutfwang was not wasted. I will continue to celebrate the Supreme Court judgment for a while because it is very good news.

“If the governor had not returned, I would have been sad, they say being joyous is a medicine, let me rejoice to improve my health. Although I have the belief that the governor will work, it is still good that we remind him to keep his promise and reward citizens with good governance, good roads, and improved security.”

A former Governor, Jonah Jang said, “The governor’s victory at the Supreme Court is a victory for democracy and against the wishes of anti-democratic forces. We must thank the justices for upholding the Rule of Law thereby affirming the long-held belief that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man…

“As sad as it is, the damage that has been done to Plateau by the miscarriage of justice at the Court of Appeal is in great proportion because the kind of judgment that was delivered by the lower court has robbed the people of their rightful representation both at the state and the National Assembly. But all hope is not lost… I want the governor to work and surpass my records in the State.”

Nde Isaac Wadak added, “This victory goes to all who believe in truth and justice. Despite the obstacles, the people overcame because reason and common sense prevailed. It has not been easy bearing the double jeopardy of insecurity and litigation. Lessons learnt should not be forgotten. So, as we revel in the victory, may we not lose sight of the enormous tasks ahead – which is the provision of better lives for the people.”

However, the Governor acknowledged he owes the people a huge debt and would do his best for the State.

While dedicating his victory at the Supreme Court to God and the people of Plateau State, “who stood by him and defended their mandate,” the Governor stated that the affirmation of his mandate is “a divine act.”

He maintained, “This judgment is historic and highly significant in the political journey of Plateau State. It is the rebirth of a new Plateau where God has demonstrated his sovereignty as the owner and giver of power.

“This will motivate me to do more for my people; I wish to strongly reaffirm my commitment to continually provide purposeful leadership. We shall not rest on our oars until the Plateau State becomes peaceful, united, and prosperous. What you have done has spurred me, I will continue to live for the interest of Plateau.”

Also, the State Deputy Governor, Ngo Josephine Piyo assured that her boss will deliver. She commended the Supreme Court judges for “their fairness and commitment to upholding justice,” and urged the citizens to “remain united and harness the collective strength and resilience the State is known for as we continue the transformational journey towards a more prosperous State.”
