An alarming incident unfolded at ABN TV/Radio in Umuahia, Abia State, on Wednesday when during a live broadcast of the program “Youth Rendezvous” officers from the Nigerian Police, Umuahia Area Command, entered the station and arrested the station’s guest, Udensi Donald while he was live on air.

The arrest was reportedly instigated by a petition related to a family matter filed by Mr. Udensi’s senior brother, Uche Onwuka Udensi. The unexpected intrusion during a live show left viewers and the station staff in shock, raising questions about the appropriateness of police actions in such circumstances.

In response to the incident, Ifeanyi Okali, the Director of ABN TV/Radio, took to social media to express his dismay. In a statement posted on his Facebook page on January 17, 2024, Okali condemned the police action as a provocation against press freedom and human rights. He emphasized the overzealousness displayed by the police in insisting on arresting their guest during the live show, despite pleas from the station’s staff to wait until the program’s conclusion.

The director further highlighted that the abrupt entry resulted in damage to some items belonging to the station, compounding the already tense situation. Okali called for accountability, demanding an apology from the state police command for what he deemed an unjustifiable intrusion into the station’s operations.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between law enforcement duties and upholding the fundamental principles of press freedom. The public outcry following the arrest reflects a growing concern about the need for law enforcement agencies to exercise restraint and adhere to proper procedures, especially in situations involving media organizations. The call for an apology underscores the urgency of addressing this matter to preserve the integrity of the press and safeguard democratic values.
