Ballon d’Or, FIFA Best Awards, Losing Credibility, Ronaldo Says After Losing Out
Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t mince words as he criticized UEFA’s Ballon d’Or and FIFA’s world best award, asserting that the prestigious soccer accolades were losing their credibility.
The football legend, renowned for his stints with Manchester United and Real Madrid, expressed dissatisfaction with Lionel Messi being named the winner for both awards, suggesting that he had been unjustly denied the recognition.
Ronaldo, known for his competitive spirit, pointed to ‘the numbers’ and made a compelling argument that he should have clinched the awards, emphasizing the impact of his performance and the statistics in comparison to other contenders like Messi, Haaland, and Mbappe.
He added a personal touch to his case, attributing his response to being axed by Manchester United as another reason for why he should have rightfully won the accolades.
In an interview with Record, Ronaldo articulated his skepticism about the awards, stating, “I think that, in a way these awards are losing credibility. We have to analyze the entire season. It’s not to say that Messi didn’t deserve it, or Haaland or even Mbappe, I simply no longer believe in these awards and it’s not because I won at the globe soccer but these are facts, the numbers are there and the numbers don’t deceive. They can’t take this trophy away from me because it’s a reality, So it makes me even happier, because the numbers are facts.”
Ronaldo’s outspoken nature was also evident in his recent claim that the Saudi Pro League surpassed Ligue 1. Additionally, he has been vocal about his remarkable goal scoring feats in 2023, further underscoring his belief in the impact of his contributions to the sport.
However, in reality, the consensus may not align with Ronaldo’s perspective, as many would argue that he didn’t deserve to win either of the awards. The acknowledgment of his greatness, while indisputable in the past, has evolved with time, and the title of the best player in the world appears to be shifting away from the 39-year-old, even if he remains steadfast in his self-belief.
