Labour Party Issues Clarification On Edo Guber Guidelines

The Labour Party has released a statement providing clarification on the guidelines for the Edo State Governorship Primaries and the nomination fees set for aspirants.

The party emphasized that the guidelines for the primary election in Edo State align with the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act, and the Labour Party constitution.

In a memo released on January 24th, 2024 and signed by the party national Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the guidelines aim to widen the scope of participation within the party, allowing members from the ward level to play roles in the emergence of the party’s candidate. Members at the ward level will nominate two delegates each, who will then nominate five delegates each at the local government level. These delegates will participate in the primary election scheduled for February 22, 2024.

The party referenced Article 27 of its constitution, which empowers the National Executive Council to formulate guidelines and regulations for the nomination of candidates for public offices. It clarified that the state Congress holds the power and responsibility to elect the governorship candidate.

Addressing the composition of the State Congress, the party noted changes in the Electoral Act 2022, which abolished statutory delegates, altering the composition of Congresses. The guideline aligns with the party’s constitution, ensuring the participation of delegates elected by the Congress of each local government in the state.

Regarding the nomination fees of N30 million for both Expression of Interest and Nomination forms, the Labour Party explained that the figure was carefully determined, considering various factors. The party highlighted the expensive nature of political office elections in Nigeria and asserted that the fees are the lowest among the major political parties.

The statement emphasized that aspirants must demonstrate capability and capacity to fund campaigns and fulfill election requirements. The party stressed the importance of political party funding, with form sales being a significant source of revenue. The fees also cover the costs associated with conducting various congresses leading to the emergence of the candidate through a democratic process.

The Labour Party called on intending aspirants to make the necessary sacrifice and participate in the exercise, assuring a level playing field for all aspirants in the pursuit of a democratic candidate selection process.
