Fubara Gets New Momentum As Supreme Court Confirms Election

The Supreme Court on Thursday confirmed the election of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as governor of Rivers State giving him new momentum in his power struggle with his erstwhile political godfather, Nyesom Wike.

GWG.ng reports that the affirmation of the election came as the apex court in a unanimous judgment dismissed an appeal by the All Progressives Congress candidate in the governorship election, Tonye Cole against the election of Fubara.

The five-man panel in the unanimous judgment affirmed that Cole failed to prove his allegations that there was non-compliance with the Electoral Act during the election.

Justice Ibrahim Saulawa read the lead judgment of the Supreme Court that confirmed the election of Fubara.

Cole had asked the Supreme Court to sack Fubara as governor of the state on the premise that he did not resign his last appointment as expected in law.

Besides, Cole had claimed that the election which brought Fubara to power was marred by irregularities.

It would be recalled that the lower courts at the tribunal and the Court of Appeal had rejected Tonye Cole’s plea on the claim that his case lacked merit.

GWG.ng reports that the dynamics in Rivers State will be reappraised as the Supreme Court has now confirmed the election of Fubara giving him a balance to fight off Wike, his estranged political godfather.
