Wike, Fubara Camps In Suspense As Supreme Court Delivers ‘Delayed’ Judgment

Anxiety is at high levels in Rivers State ahead of the expected judgment by the Supreme Court on the petitions against the election of  Governor Simi Fubara by the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Tonye Cole.

GWG.ng reports that the judgment day has been repeatedly shifted as intrigues shadowed the political relationship between Fubara and his erstwhile political patrons who have now turned against him.

The intrigues have been especially heightened by the discord between Fubara and his one time political godfather, Nyesom Wike.

GWG.ng reports that Wike had announced Fubara who served as his accountant in the Government House and subsequently as accountant-general while he was governor. That was despite the opposition of many critical political stakeholders in the state who were also interested in the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

However, Wike brushed aside the opposition and for most of the campaign mounted the campaign rostrum on behalf of Fubara and delivered him as winner of the election.

However, the breakdown of relations between the two as manifested by the division in the House of Assembly has led to new intrigues with Wike confessing that he made a bad choice in picking Fubara as his successor. He has apologized to some of his more enduring political associates who he pushed away including the one time chairman of the PDP in the State, Felix Obuah, popularly known as Go-Round for his bad choice.

GWG.ng reports that President Bola Tinubu had intervened and worked out a nine-point resolution for peace between Wike and Fubara. While Fubara has honoured nearly all points in the agreement, the governor and his inner circle have remained mum on issues leaving a feeling that the camp was bidding its time for the Supreme Court judgment to move against Wike.

Associates of the governor have consistently rebuffed comments on issues with a sense of foreboding that Fubara was only waiting for the Supreme Court judgment to define his position before acting against Wike.

However, for Wike the options are not also very promising. Handing over the victory to the APC by the courts would mean the emergence of a surrogate of his avowed political enemy, Rotimi Amaechi.

The annulment of the election would, however, also put Wike in a difficult situation as only those who participated in the March, 2023 election would partake.

One promising option for the Wike camp being canvassed on Wednesday was to push for judgment in favour of Fubara at the Supreme Court and then a swift impeachment by the House of Assembly that is in the hands of Wike.
