Bodies found in Lagos

Operatives of the Nigerian Police attached to the Department of Force Intelligence – Intelligence Response Team (DFI-IRT) as well as anti-violent crimes section, anti-kidnapping section and other state commands have killed a wanted kidnap kingpin, Mai Gemu also known as Godara.

It was learnt that the kidnap kingpin was killed at about 1:40am on Friday alongside two other members of his gang after a fierce gun duel that lasted several minutes between security operatives and the deadly gang.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, who addressed a press conference at the headquarters of IRT in Guzape, Abuja on Friday said Godara was killed during a shoot out with the police early on Friday.

Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, explained that some of the bandits were the ones terrorising innocent citizens from Bwari, an outskirt of the nation’s capital, Kaduna and Nasarawa states.

The senior police officer stressed that this was another significant stride towards fortifying the security landscape in the FCT following the recent launch of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS).

According to the police spokesman, security operatives would not relent in combing bushes and shanties in border areas between the FCT, Niger, Kaduna, and Nasarawa states.

“In the early hours of today (Friday), at about 0140hrs, operatives of the DFI-IRT engaged some bandits within the axis in a fierce gun battle and neutralised 3 of them including their gang leader known as Mai Gemu a.k.a Godara.

“We can say without mincing words, that the gang and its camp have been destroyed. The gangs and many others who venture into crime and kidnapping in Bwari, border communities linking to the Kaduna axis would never know peace as our concentrated efforts are being intensified,” Adejobi told journalists at the briefing.

Daily Trust had reported how bandits had attempted to breach the security architecture of the nation’s capital with their recent activities where several residents of communities on the outskirt of the FCT were kidnapped while some were killed.

Suppliers of ammunition to bandits nabbed

Besides the news that Godara was killed, Adejobi disclosed that some people suspected to be suppliers of ammunition to the terrorists were apprehended on the Abuja-Kaduna highway on January 24.

He said operatives of the DFI-IRT working on intelligence subsequently intercepted the groups of persons while on their way along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway.

Specifically, the senior cop noted that they were suspected to be major suppliers of arms and ammunition to bandits operating in Niger State, Zamfara State and Kaduna State.

He added, “The suspects, upon arrest and consequent interrogation confessed to the crimes. One of the suspects, Ibrahim Hussaini is currently in custody while the other 2 suspects are leading the IRT operatives to their hideouts where they store their weapons for distribution.”
