Amusan Breaks Alozie’s African 60m Record In Astana

In a remarkable feat, world record holder Tobi Amusan has added the African indoor record to her illustrious achievements by breaking Glory Alozie’s 7.82 best at the opening leg of the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Saturday.

The 26-year-old reigning World 100m hurdles record holder at 12.12, displayed a glimpse of her prowess by storming home in 7.91 seconds during her semifinal heat.

Amusan further elevated her performance, clocking an impressive 7.77 seconds to secure victory in the event. She outpaced the 2019 World outdoor champion Nia Ali (7.89) and Irish athlete Sarah Lavin (7.91), who claimed the second and third positions, respectively.

This outstanding time has positioned Amusan as the second-fastest on the world top list for the season, trailing behind Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas, who ran 7.75 last week at the Corky Classics in Lubbock, Texas.

Notably, Amusan has ascended to the 20th spot on the world all-time list. The Commonwealth Games champion has now achieved the remarkable feat of breaking all three African records previously held by Glory Alozie.

Her record-breaking journey began with surpassing Alozie’s African Games record of 12.74 set in 1999, as Amusan clocked 12.68 to claim victory two decades later in 2019.

Continuing her dominance, Amusan shattered Alozie’s 12.44 African record by running an impressive 12.42 seconds on her way to securing her first Diamond League title.

In an awe-inspiring display, the sprint hurdler has now etched her name in the record books, holding the records for Nigeria, Nigerian Championships, African, African Games, African Indoor, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and the world. Tobi Amusan’s accomplishments mark a significant milestone in her already illustrious career.
