US Professor Accidentally Shot During Farewell Gathering In Osun
In the quiet town of Ejigbo, Osun State, an evening meant for bidding farewell took a tragic turn as Richard Adeoriokin, a Nigerian professor and politician based in the US, met an untimely end due to an accidental gunshot from a local security guard.
The unfortunate incident occurred around 8:30 pm on Saturday after a public function along Inisha Road in Ejigbo. Professor Adeoriokin had attended the event with his political associates and Oyeyode Oyesosin, the son of the Ogiyan of Ejigbo.
Following a meeting at the king’s residence, a traditional send-off took a devastating turn when Oyeyode Oyesosin instructed the security guard to fire gunshots into the air. However, tragedy struck as one of the shots discharged downward, hitting Professor Adeoriokin in the leg. Despite immediate attempts to secure medical assistance, he tragically succumbed to his injuries at the Baptist Hospital in Ejigbo.
The professor, known for his role as a lecturer at Prairie View A&M University in Houston, Texas, and his affiliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had earlier participated in a ceremony where Governor Ademola Adeleke received a chieftaincy title.
In the aftermath of the accidental shooting, an enraged mob took matters into their own hands, resulting in the tragic death of the security guard responsible for the fatal shot.
Governor Ademola Adeleke swiftly responded by ordering a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances leading to the deaths of both Professor Adeoriokin and the security guard. Additionally, he directed the State Police Command to establish guidelines on the use of local firearms to prevent similar tragedies during public events in the future.
The professor’s final resting place is now the Osun State University Teaching Hospital Morgue, leaving the local community in mourning. Calls for justice echo through the town, accompanied by urgent pleas for safety measures to prevent the recurrence of such a heartbreaking event.
