The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressive Congress (APC) were on Saturday engaged in a heated exchange, each presenting conflicting views on the conduct of the Ebonyi South Senatorial bye-election.

Silas Onu, the senatorial candidate of the PDP, took center stage, accusing the APC of engaging in widespread irregularities such as vote buying, ballot snatching, and other malpractices. While speaking to reporters at his Ishieke polling unit in Uburu Ohaozara local government area, Onu lamented, “It is probably bye and not an election. That is what we are seeing, especially in Ohaozara local government area. There is no election.”

Onu made serious allegations, claiming that the APC was using thuggery to coerce voters, invalidate PDP votes, and indulge in the snatching of ballot boxes. He went on to allege that the APC, aware of the court’s dismissal of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS), was resorting to thumbprinting in undisclosed locations. According to him, “This is not healthy for democracy. I am satisfied that because of me, the whole of APC in Ebonyi South are not sleeping. It says something about the acceptance that I have here. So, I am satisfied to have caused them sleepless night, I am satisfied to have made them spend so much money to steal the election.”

Onu emphasized that his presence in the race thwarted APC’s plans to manipulate the outcome, vowing to review and address any irregularities. He raised concerns about the degradation of democracy and the rise of lawlessness in the electoral process.

In contrast, Stanley Emegha, the APC Chairman in the state, dismissed Onu’s claims and described the election as free and fair. He accused the opposition of preemptively complaining, suggesting that they were aware of their impending defeat. Emegha commended INEC, security, and other agencies for their role in ensuring a credible and fair election.
