Fire in Lagos market

A devastating fire wreaked havoc at the furniture market opposite Blenco Supermarket along Addo Road in the Ajah area of Lagos State, resulting in the loss of goods and properties valued at millions of naira. The distressing incident unfolded on the evening of Monday, January 5, 2024.

Social media was flooded with video clips capturing the chaotic scene as commuters and car owners scrambled for safety amidst the rapidly spreading flames. The cause of the fire remains unknown at the time of this report, and there is no record of casualties. The presence of National Emergency Management Agency or other rescue agencies at the scene is also uncertain.

In a separate incident, the popular sawmill and plank market situated at Awori bus stop in Abule Egba, Lagos State, fell victim to a fire outbreak. Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed this unfortunate event, attributing the fire to a high-tension cable.

“At 16:20hrs, the agency received a distress call via its toll-free emergency numbers and activated the LASEMA response plans,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. Responding promptly, LASEMA’s Igando zone, with the Response Unit from the agency’s hub at Cappa Base, discovered the sawmill, plank, and building material market engulfed in flames.

Investigations revealed that a high-tension cable had severed and fallen onto dry plywoods, igniting a blaze that swiftly consumed the entire market area. The distribution company was promptly contacted, leading to the disconnection of public electricity power supply to the affected area from the national grid.

LASEMA’s fire unit, alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, is actively combating the inferno to prevent its spread to nearby buildings. The aftermath of the fire has left several shops, the extent of which is yet unknown, affected, with goods valued at millions of naira lost. Thankfully, in both incidents, no lives were lost, providing a small silver lining amid the widespread destruction.
