Nigerian University Shut Amid Students’ Protests Against Fee Hike

Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State has been shut down in the aftermath of a student protest against a proposed hike in school fees.

The uproar began when students took to the streets on Tuesday, venting their frustration over the impending increase in tuition fees imposed by the university’s management. Adding fuel to the fire, students reported being barred from taking their examinations due to unpaid fees.

Videos captured during the protest depict scenes of chaos and discontent. Some students are seen fleeing from examination halls, lamenting their expulsion, while others are shown pursuing a man believed to be the vice-chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe.

In response to the unrest, the university swiftly issued a circular, bearing the signature of the vice-chancellor, announcing the immediate closure of the institution. Students were instructed to vacate the premises by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 6, 2024.

Prof. Iwe, in the circular, defended the university’s position, citing that a significant majority of students had already settled their fees and were peacefully engaging in their examinations. However, he noted that the disruption was incited by a faction of students described as “miscreants and hoodlums.”

The statement emphasizes the university’s commitment to preserving the safety and security of all stakeholders on campus, underscoring the decision to shut down operations indefinitely.

Amidst the turmoil, the closure raises concerns about the academic progress and welfare of the student body, leaving many pondering the future course of action for both the university management and the aggrieved students.
