JAPA: Outrage Follows New Rules For Verification Of Nigerian Nurses

Published

Nigerians from different fields of endeavours have vehemently registered their disapproval of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria’s (NMCN) updated outrageous requirements from applicants seeking for verification of certificate(s) to foreign Nursing/ Board Council.

The NMCN announced its updated verification requirements in a two-page circular signed by the Board Chairman, Dr (Mrs) Bola Abosede and Registrar, Farouk Umar Abubakar and posted on its official X handle on Wednesday.

Some portions of the circular stated,

“The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria hereby inform you of the revised guidelines and requirements to be met by all applicants seeking for verification of certificate (s) to foreign Nursing/ board Council.”

Enumerating some requirements from eligible applicants, the NMCN stated,

“A non-refundable fee shall be paid for verification to foreign boards of Nursing as specialized on the portal.

“Eligible applicants must have a minimum of two years post qualification experience from the date of issuance of permanent practicing license. Any application with provisional license shall be rejected outrightly.”

“The Council shall request a letter of Good Standing from the Chief Executive Officer of applicant’s place of work and the last nursing training institution attended and responses of these shall be addressed directly to the Registrar/CEO Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. Please note that Council will not accept such letter(s) through the applicant.

“Applicants must have an active practicing license with a minimum of six months to expiration date,” circular stated.

In response to NMCM’s post, Nigerians took to their X official handles to voice their disapproval. See some comments below:

‘YOU  are the Nursing council, you don’t need an employers testament of good standing to issue verification. You are the one to verify the applicants good standing to the international nursing board. It’s totally an Unnecessary step”.

Toying reacted “@Nigeria_NMC

It absolutely wrong to attach Nigerian nurses verification condition to Chief Executive Officer which are always Medical Doctors.

Nurses now await the approval of a Medical doctor before they can make progress in their career.

This decision has to be reversed.”

Elijah O. Alonge kicked, “Nonsense!!! This is denial of human right and it shall be informed to @ICNurses @WHO @UNHumanRights. Haven been verified by different nursing body around the world. There has never been an occasion where regulating bodies asked for work experience or mandated years of service.”

Ademidamola said, “Aren’t we supposed to be moving forward? Verification that used to take 2 weeks is now 6 months? E buru leeyan o. Which one is 2 years post qualification experience again? Indirectly, a newly qualified Nurse can’t apply for verification niyen o. Olorun a re’jo da o.”

The Nigerian Doctor said,

“Nigerian Doctors will not be silent.

Our nursing brothers and sisters deserve better.

This is a cruel position for NMCN to take.

The economy is hurting everyone.

You should not hold ur own members hostage.”

Inem said,

“1. You’re a professional body, act like it. Cos why are you using mobile phone to snap an official document for social media?

2. 6 months for verification is too long. Countries are moving forward and advancing the nursing practice… when e reach our turn..voicemail.

3. 2 years of work minimum before verification is BS. First world countries don’t even do that. Not that you should copy them oh but wisdom is profitable to direct. Nursing registers all around the world could be filled with Nigerians but how many foreign nurses are on our own register?

I know you don’t want people to japa.. but doing this just shows how backward the nursing profession is and exactly why people are leaving. Instead of you guys to encourage nurses to come back and give to advance the profession in Nigeria, you’re doing fire for fire.

I will die on this hill: THERE IS NO NURSING SHORTAGE!

Pay your nurses well and you will see them. Because call it pride or whatever, but I personally did not pass through that traumatic nursing school only to come and be earning less than 100k (and that’s even low).

IT’S AN INSULT.

Finally… we know what you are so go back to your oga at the top and tell them that WE NO GO GREE!🫵🏾”

Oyindamola said,

“Our nurses needs us now so If you see this tweet, Please save the Nursing practice in Nigeria by just Reposting.

Let’s join our voice against injustice.👩‍⚕️🔊”
