AFCON FINAL: Cardiology Professor Tells Those With Heart Issues What To Do
As anticipation mounts for the highly-anticipated African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Nigeria and Ivory Coast this Sunday, a stern warning has been issued by Professor Ranti Familoni, an expert in Medicine and Cardiology from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.
Professor Familoni has advised Nigerians with unstable cardiovascular conditions to exercise caution and consider refraining from watching the match due to the potential health risks involved.
The cautionary statement comes in the wake of recent incidents where individuals collapsed and tragically passed away while engaging in sporting activities or attending social gatherings. One such instance, reported by GWG.ng, involved an All Progressives Congress chieftain, Cairo Ojougboh, a National Youth Service Corps member, and three others who succumbed to sudden cardiac events while watching a football match.
Professor Familoni emphasized that sudden cardiac death is a real and serious concern, often occurring in individuals with underlying heart disease, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed. The cardiology professor stressed the importance of recognizing the signs of heart-related issues and taking appropriate precautions, particularly during moments of heightened emotional and physical exertion, such as watching a high-stakes sporting event like the AFCON final.
The medical expert urges individuals to prioritize their health and well-being, advising those with known cardiovascular conditions to remain vigilant, adhere to prescribed medications, and avoid situations that may exacerbate their condition. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of regular medical check-ups, especially for conditions like hypertension, which often go unnoticed due to their silent nature.
In light of the impending match, Professor Familoni advised everyone to monitor their blood pressure levels and listen to their bodies for any signs of distress or irregularities in heart rate. The cardiology expert emphasized that while the AFCON final may be an exciting event, prioritizing personal health and safety should always take precedence.
As Nigerians eagerly await the thrilling showdown on the football field, Professor Familoni’s words serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of proactive health management and the potential risks associated with neglecting cardiovascular health
