How Ivory Coast’s ‘Haller’ Beat Cancer, Beat Super Eagles At AFCON
Following the Elephant of Ivory Coast’s victory over the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the amazing story of how Ivory Coast’s scorer, Sébastien Haller, beat testicular cancer, made a return to football in 2023 and scored Ivory’s Coast winning goal at AFCON has gone viral on the internet.
Haller was diagnosed with testicular cancer shortly after joining Borussia Dortmund from Ajax Amsterdam in July 2022. The 29-year-old striker underwent two surgeries and chemotherapy in the ensuing months, before returning to action just over a year ago according to Reuters.

At AFCON final on Sunday night, Haller scored the second goal that secure Ivory Coast’s victory over Nigeria.
A year ago, Haller told Bundesliga.com that he hoped to inspire cancer patients all over the world after scoring his first competitive goal following his own battle with the disease.
“To score today was a great message to everyone who is fighting today or will fight later. It gives some hope, some courage. That’s it, you know?” He said.
