NIMET Advises Public On How To Cope With Heatwave
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has issued a cautionary update, revealing that the ongoing heatwave across the country is anticipated to persist in the coming days.
In its latest weather and climate report, NIMET outlined the implications of the prevailing weather conditions and offered guidance to citizens on managing the situation effectively.
“With temperatures soaring to 41°C in the Northern regions and 39°C in the Southern areas, our projections indicate a continuation of elevated temperatures,” the agency stated.
NIMET emphasized the risk of dehydration stemming from these extreme heatwave and weather conditions, highlighting potential health hazards including fainting, heat-related ailments, respiratory issues, and increased vulnerability to chronic illnesses such as chickenpox, measles, heat rash, weakness, slight fever, and dry lips.
NIMET advised the public to prioritize adequate fluid intake to mitigate the effects of the heatwave. Additionally, NIMET recommended seeking shade, utilizing fans, and opting for lightweight, breathable clothing to minimize exposure to high temperatures.
Furthermore, NIMET urged individuals to refrain from engaging in strenuous physical activities during periods of peak heat to prevent heat-related complications.
GWG.ng reports that the advisory from NIMET on the extreme heatwave follows protests from across the country on the failure of the utility companies to provide electricity in the night to cool the heatwave.
