Akeredolu: Ondo Declares Two-Day Public Holiday
The Ondo State Government has declared Thursday, February 22 and Friday, February 23 as public holidays in honour of the late former Gov Rotimi Akeredolu.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Ebenezer Adeniyan, on Tuesday in Akure.
Adeniran said the two-day holiday will allow people of the state to honour the late former governor with several programmes billed for both days.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akeredolu died in Germany on Dec. 27, 2023 and would be buried on Friday in Owo, his hometown, according to the programme released by the family.
“The two work-free days will allow the people of the state to participate in the burial activities of the former governor,” the statement said. (NAN)
Meanwhile, besides the news of the two-day public holidays in memory of Akeredolu, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) had earlier re-scheduled local government election in the state for July 15.
The election was earlier scheduled for Feb. 17.
The ODIEC Chairman, Mr Joseph Aremo, made this known at a stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday in Akure.
According to him, the election was postponed in line with the provisions of extant laws.
“We can’t conduct the election for ourselves, we will only conduct the election when parties comply with the guidelines and when we have valid nominations.
“We will conduct the election when parties and their candidates turn up for verification and others things that are required as specified in our guidelines and the enabling laws,” he said
