Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), has urged Nigerians to refrain from hastily passing judgment on President Bola Tinubu’s performance, emphasizing the need for patience and understanding during a press briefing on Wednesday following his meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Gowon disclosed that he had advised Tinubu not to be unduly concerned about the current criticisms directed at his administration, asserting that it was premature to deliver a definitive assessment of the Tinubu-led government’s performance.

Speaking to State House correspondents, Gowon remarked, “well, I was telling him that no Nigerian leader that can get there and will not have all the report of what is being said about him.”

He acknowledged the challenges faced by the government, stating, “But certainly, there’s no doubt from what one hears and what one sees on the various media, etc. I think the government is trying their best to deal with the various problems of the country.”

Gowon encouraged patience, noting, “Don’t you worry you will get criticised, but people who get there know better than you know. I think all what one can say is that Nigerians, we’ve got to give the president time. And it is too early to sort of say absolute result, perfect result will be achieved now.”

Reflecting on his own experiences during the Nigerian Civil War, Gowon highlighted the importance of perseverance amidst criticism, recalling, “That is my opinion. I know and if I can remember, when I was fighting the war, I was told I was too slow and that probably Nigeria cannot make it and that we should now seek for discussion.”

Gowon and Tinubu also addressed the ongoing crisis in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with Gowon, a founding father of the regional bloc, stressing the urgency of finding a resolution.

Addressing recent reports suggesting his absence from a recent ECOWAS conference, Gowon clarified that it was a result of miscommunication. He affirmed that he and Tinubu had deliberated on plans regarding ECOWAS during their meeting.

“This is my first visit to Mr. President since the inauguration, but I was there at the inauguration to wish him well and all success,” Gowon explained, shedding light on his efforts to schedule the meeting amidst Tinubu’s busy schedule.

Regarding the ECOWAS conference, Gowon clarified, “So, this is what has brought me here and we had a very interesting meeting and I’m sure some of you have read reports that I refused to attend ECOWAS conference, isn’t it?…No, that is not the case.”

Gowon’s clarification elucidated the miscommunication and reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the ECOWAS crisis, with plans for a message to be conveyed later at the ECOWAS headquarters.
