Osunbor Withdraws From ‘Shameful’ Edo APC Primary

Published

on

Former governor of Edo State Professor Osehreinmen Osunbor has withdrawn himself from the ongoing primary of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Edo State describing the party’s decision to continue with the ‘illegalities’ of last weekend as shameful.

In a letter to the national chairman of the party and obtained by GWG.ng, Osunbor said that he was appalled that the party had decided to continue from where it stopped last Saturday declaring that nothing could be built on the illegalities that occurred last weekend.

GWG.ng reports that last Saturday’s direct primary election to choose a candidate for the Edo 2024 election was marred by irregularities and subsequently by violence.

At least three aspirants were declared as winners by different tendencies in the party before the APC national leadership late on Tuesday declared the election as inconclusive. The party declared that it would conclude the process on Thursday but without giving indication of what marred the earlier exercise.

Affirming that the Thursday exercise was essentially meant to legitimize the perceived illegalities of last Saturday, Osunbor thus prayed the party to withdraw his name.

In the letter dated February 21, 2024, Osunbor said:

NOTICE OF WITHDRAWAL FROM EDO STATE APC GOVERNORSHIP PRIMARY

ELECTION

My attention has been drawn to a Press Statement published this morning by Felix Morka, Esq, the APC Publicity Secretary, to the effect that the National Working Committee of the party has resolved “that the Edo State Governorship Primary Election has not been completed, and has now fixed Thursday February 22, 2024 (tomorrow) for, the completion of the Primary Election Process”.

The primary election purportedly conducted last Saturday 17 February 2024 was, in my view, an exercise in illegality, shameful and a reckless and total disregard of the procedure under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, the APC Constitution, and the Guidelines for the Conduct of the Governorship primaries.

“To suggest or imply, as the statement seems to convey, that the National Working Committee desires to complete a totally flawed process goes against my principles of integrity, transparency and all the values that I hold dear.

Accordingly, I hereby give you notice that | do not wish to participate in the process which I see as an attempt to legitimise the illegitimate exercise of last Saturday.

It is an attempt to build something on nothing.

Kindly therefore remove my name from the list of aspirants forthwith.

With assurances of my respect as I remain a member of APC

Yours faithfully,

Sen. (Prof) O.A. Osunbor.

GWG.ng reports that the decision of Osunbor nonetheless, the APC is going ahead with the Edo governorship primary with the new chairman, Gov Bassey Otu in charge.
