BREAKING: First US Space Craft To The Moon In 50 Years Arrives (Video)

The first landing on the moon by a United States mission occurred just after midnight Nigerian time with the privately owned Odysseus touching lunar surface at about 00.24.

GWG.ng reports that it is the first time in more than 50 years since a spacecraft from the United States touched the moon, the last being Apollo 17 in 1972 the year before the Nigerian naira was introduced as a national currency.

The confirmation of the landing of the Odysseus took some time to confirm by mission control as the landing was followed by an applause after about 15 minutes confirming the successful trip.

GWG.ng reports that the landing was, however, preceded by some anxiety following reports of some technical glitches with a part of the landing gear.

The Houston, Texas based company Intuitive Machines overseeing the mission, launched the Odysseus from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on February 15.

The 384,400-kilometer journey to the moon, equivalent to traveling between Lagos and London 38 times, GWG.ng reports, is the first mission by a private space company which is likely to set off a new dynamics in space travel. It is also being acclaimed as a new beginning in space travel as it opens up lunar journey to the private sector.

The unmanned space vehicle measuring about 4 meters by 1.5 meters is believed to be carrying several payloads from among others six payloads from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA and others from some private companies.

The first pictures of the landing are expected to take at least 30 minutes to arrive the earth.

 Odysseus landed in a flat region near the Malapert A crater, about 300 kilometers from the moon’s south pole, a spot that is potentially a future landing space for future lunar trips by NASA.
