Super Falcons and Cameroon

The Super Falcons of Nigeria were held to a goalless draw against Cameroon in the first leg of the qualifier for the women’s football event at the 2024 Olympics.

The match at the Stade de la Réunification in Douala on Friday showcased Nigeria’s struggle to find their rhythm against the Indomitable Lionesses.

Leading the team for the first time since the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Randy Waldrum returned as the Falcons’ head coach after resolving contractual issues that had temporarily sidelined him. Alongside him was Ashleigh Plumptre, who rejoined the team after her last appearance at the World Cup. Despite these reinforcements, Nigeria failed to replicate the commanding performance that saw them defeat Ethiopia 5-1 on aggregate in the previous round of qualifiers.

Throughout the match, the Cameroonians dominated possession, leaving Nigeria battling to penetrate their opponent’s defense. While there was a brief period of promising possession spurred by the substitution of Toni Payne for Jennifer Echegini in the second half, Nigeria was unable to convert their opportunities into goals. Two goals from Echegini were disallowed for offside by the match officials, leaving the Falcons frustrated.

The focus now shifts to the return leg of the clash, which will take place at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on Monday, where Nigeria will have the home advantage. The winner of this tie will advance to face either Tanzania or South Africa in the final round of qualifiers, with only two teams from Africa securing a spot at the 2024 Olympics.

Scheduled to be held in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, 2024, the 2024 Olympics present an opportunity for the Falcons to once again showcase their talents on the international stage. Having previously participated in the Olympics in 2000, 2004, and 2008, Nigeria aims to make a triumphant return to the prestigious tournament.
